Prawn Roast / Eral Varuval is a dish where the prawn / shrimp is cooked crispy and crunchy outside and soft and juicy inside. I use to prepare this Prawn Roast / Eral Varuval very often at home, as it takes just 20 mins on the whole, this can be prepared for lunch box or even in a hurry burry.

Prawn Roast / Eral Varuval

Ingredients:

  • Prawns / Shrimp / இரால் – ½ kg
  • Red chilli powder / மிளகாய் பொடி – 1 ¼ tsp
  • Coriander powder / மல்லி பொடி – 2 tsp
  • Cumin powder / சீரக தூள் – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder / மஞ்சள் தூள் – ¼ tsp
  • Curry leaves / கறிவேப்பிலை –  a sprig
  • Onion / வெங்காயம் – ½ no (medium size)
  • Garlic / பூண்டு – 4 cloves
  • Coriander stalks / மல்லி தழை – 3 nos
  • Salt / உப்பு – ½ tso
  • Oil / எண்ணெய் – 2 tsp

Preparation:

  • Clean and wash the prawns.
  • Take all the spice powders together in a wide mouth bowl along with salt.
  • Add the prawns / shrimp to the bowl, and mix it well. Let it rest for 15 mins
  • Meanwhile, peel and finely chop the onion, garlic and coriander stalks, keep it aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan / tawa, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek and curry leaves, wait until they crackle.
  • Add the marinated prawns along with the marinate.
  • Cover and cook in medium flame for 3 mins.
  • Remove the lid, turn the sides of the prawns, cover the lid and cook in medium flame for another 4 mins.
  • Remove the lid and cook in medium flame until the prawns become dry.
  • Sprinkle coriander leaves, remove it from fire.

Serve hot. Goes out well as a side dish with steamed rice and any vegetarian curry (kulambu).

Eating rice in the same way (steamed with some stew/curry) is boring at times, but in spite of all these, there are few people who want to eat rice and go for biryani or pulao. So this rice is very helpful at those times, with very few ingredients. I have induced prawns, you can substitute them with chicken or vegetables or even serve it as plain herb rice.

Ingredients:

  • Prawn – 200 gms
  • Steamed Rice – 2 ½ cup (1 cup – 160 ml)
  • Onion – 1 no
  • Garlic – 3 cloves
  • Butter – 1 ½ tbsp.
  • Italian herbs (oregano, thyme, rosemary) – 1 tsp (all together)
  • Black pepper powder – 1 tsp
  • Green chilli – 1 no
  • Salt – 1 ¼ tsp or as per your taste

Preparation:

  • Peel and finely chop the onions and garlic into fine pieces. Slit the green chilli to equal halves.
  • Melt butter in a very heavy bottomed vessel, add onions and garlic, cook until they turn golden brown in color.
  • Add the green chill, prawn, Italian herbs, salt and half the amount of black pepper powder, cook in medium flame for 5 mins or until the prawn is cooked.
  • Add the rice, followed by the leftover black pepper powder and cook in medium flame for another 5 mins or until the rice combines well.
  • Remove it from fire.

Serve hot with any Gravies like Prawn Potato Gravy or Curd Chicken.

Note: I have been using smaller size prawns in this recipe, you can make use of size of your choice, but the small ones are preferably suitable.

Prawn coconut milk curry

Ingredients:

  • Prawn – ½ kg
  • Onions – 2 nos
  • Tomato – 1 no
  • Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Split Black lentil – ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
  • Garlic – 6 cloves
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Coconut milk – 150 ml
  • Cumin powder – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Salt to taste

Making of Prawn coconut milk curry –

Preparation:

  • Peel and roughly chop the onions and tomatoes.
  • Chop the garlic into small pieces.
  • Heat a tsp of oil in kadai, add the chopped onions and cook until the raw smell goes off.
  • Add the tomatoes and cook for few mins.
  • Add chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and cook until the raw smell goes off.
  • Remove it from fore, bring it room temperature and grind it to a fine paste by adding water.
  • Heat the leftover oil in the same kadai, add the mustard, split black lentil and curry leaves, wait until they crackle.
  • Add the garlic and cook until they turn golden brown.
  • Add the prawns followed by salt and pour the ground masala with ½ cup of water, cover and cook for 3 to 4 mins.
  • Remove the lid and pour the coconut milk, cook for few mins or until the oil separates and floats on the top of the gravy.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with any variety rice or steamed rice.
