Pongal – 3


MAATU PONGAL:  The third day is celebrated as “Maatu pongal”, madu means cow. It is celebrated by the villagers together to thank the cows for their in farming. People bathe their cattle, paint their horns and decorate them with garland, turmeric water, kumkum on their forehead and feed them with Pongal.  Also on this day women offer prayers in the hope that the brother-sister ties may remain forever.

KAANUM PONGAL :  The fourth day is celebrated as “Kaanum Pongal”, the word kaanum means “to visit”.  On this day, people visit relatives and friends to enjoy the festive season. Brothers gift their married sisters as affirmation of love.
