Plantain Bhajji/Plantain Fritters/Valakkai Bhajji

Plantain bhajji is one of the most important snack made in all South Indian houses. That too when it’s made in rainy day and served with coconut chutney and tea, it takes you to heaven. Bhajji’s are also made with brinjal, cauliflower, onion, potato, egg and chicken. But compared with all these plantain bhaji is the most common and the tasty one.

Bhajji ready to serve.

Ingredients:

  • Plantain – 2 nos
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Besan – ¼ kg
  • Chilli powder – ¼ tsp
  • Pepper powder – ½ tsp
  • Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
  • Baking soda – a pinch
  • Red clolour powder – ¼ tsp
  • Salt to taste

Preparation:

  • For batter: Mix besan, chilli powder, pepper powder, asafoetida, baking soda, salt, colour powder. Pour water and mix it well, be sure no lumps are formed.  The consistency should be up to coat the spoon. Do not disturb for 5 minutes.
  • Slice plantain lengthwise. Put them in water, so that the colour doesn’t changes.
  • Heat oil in a kadai.
  • Dip the plantain in the batter and drop them in oil.
  • Fry them one by one.

Serve hot with chutney.

Note: The batter should be in right consistency. If it’s too liquid, it would not coat the plantain. If it’s too thick, it would be hard instead of being fluffy. If too much of baking soda is added, it would absorb too much oil while frying.
