Muskmelon is a species of melon that has been developed into many varieties. They are widely known as cantaloupes. Cantaloupes have a round or oblong shape, a soft consistency and juicy texture with sweet musky aroma which is best found in completely ripe fruits. Although cantaloupes are considered to be muskmelon, they are not cantaloupes. Their tastes and looks similar to cantaloupe, but the colour of the flesh is a brighter orange one.
They are known as Kharbhuja in India and Mulam pazham or Kirni pazham in tamil. They are very popular in tropical countries. This fruit is excellent for cooling down during the summer. It is also extremely filling and refreshing.
A good quality fruit depends on the melon texture and the sugars that are developed during ripening. When they become ripe their colour changes from green to yellow or tan with netting. The picking of the fruit should be done when there is easy separation of the stem from the vine, also there will be cracks present near the attachment point. The fruit should not be plucked early cause it won’t taste good. Their seeds are also used for cooking.
It also contains high level of nutrition, which contributes to many health benefits. They are and excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Potassium and fiber. It helps to control blood pressure, regulates heart beat and prevents strokes, also helps in achieving healthy skin and hair.
