Standard

Deepavali / Diwali is an important Indian (Hindu) festival celebrated by all the Indians in India and across the world. As we are in the land of “Unity of Diversity”, each and every state people celebrate it in their own way, also Diwali is celebrated in two different states whereas south Indian celebrates it on 18 oct and North Indian celebrates it on 19th oct. Being a south Indian and living together with so many region people in our apartment, glad we got to celebrate it for 2 days.

Madraasi Deepavali Celebrations at home / Diwali celebration 2017

We (South Indian) wake up, early in the morning, apply oil to the head, take bath, later start preparing snacks and food for pooja. Once they are done, we perform pooja, get blessing from the elders, and elders of our family distribute the new dress to everyone. After wearing the new dress, we have our breakfast, and the breakfast would be served in a banana leaf with too many sweets and savories that has been prepared all over a week time. As sharing is caring we distribute sweets and savories prepared in our home to our neighbors, friends – wishing them Happy DEEPAVALI.

Taking this to Fiesta Friday #134 hosted by Angie@thenovicegarderner.

After the sweets distribution, here comes the best part of a year waiting – It’s the crackers section. We start bursting crackers, with family, friends, with loads of fun and joy. After bursting few crackers, we return home and start watching the Television as there will be more and more fun filled program, also there will be numerous movie getting released for this Diwali. It would be more fun and super thrilled getting tickets for our favorite star movie, and then watching them at the Cinemas with the whole family as a group. Then over the evening we lit Deepam / Diya perform pooja and then during nights we start bursting out the crackers, sparkle sparklers, chakras, flowerpots and so on.

Vinayagar Chaturthi – 2017 / Ganesh Chathurthi – 2017 celebrations at our home

Standard

It’s almost 7 yrs, we have been to Bangalore, usually in my parent’s parents place or in my in-laws place we celebrate Vinayagar Chaturthi by preparing few dishes, offer to Lord Ganesh at our home and visit temple for special pooja. But after coming to Bangalore, we found too many Ganesh idols, all over the streets few days before Vinayagar Chaturthi and when daughter wanted to get one of them and do pooja, sing bhajan, decorate Ganesh, offer food to Lord at least for 3 days. This resulted us in bringing Ganesh Idol and celebrating the way she wanted and later immersing it the nearby lake. So, this was happening for almost 6 years at our home. But with the small change from last two years, we have been immersing Ganesha in a bucket of water, later collecting the soil and planting herbs on it.

We here in our apartment also celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, by decorating Ganesha, each and every one preparing a dish, which is served as an offering and later distributed to all of us. Later followed by some cultural program by our kids, bhajans, evening filled with fun, laughter and games.

Navaratri is a Hindu festival symbolizing victory of positivity over negativity, Navratri literally means ‘nine nights’ in Sanskrit; Nav – means Nine and Ratri – means night. During these nine nights and ten days, Hindu deity Durga is worshipped in different forms. Navartri is celebrated in different ways according to their region all over India.

As a Tamilian, I am here to share the how it’s celebrated all over Tamil Nadu. In Tamilnadu, people set up steps and place idols on them. This is known as golu. In the evening women invite each other to visit their homes to view kolu and exchange sweets and gifts. Devotional shlokas are chanted and after performing puja, the food items offered to Goddess are served to guests.

On the 9th day Saraswati Puja, the puja are performed to the Goddess Saraswati, the diving source of wisdom and enlightment. Books and musical instruments are placed in the puja and worshipped as a source of knowledge.

The 10th day is the most auspicious day of all – Vijayadasami. It was the day in which evil is destroyed by Goddess. It marks new and prosperous beginning. New ventures started on this day are believed to flourish and bring prosperity. Kids often start tutoring on this day to have a head start in their education.
