Madraasi with Kids – Week 4


As weeks start growing, I could see the interest and passion towards cooking in these kids. There are few who come 30 mins before the class and start asking me about the dish, the preparation and even the healthiest part of consuming the dish.

The main motive of this class is to stop kids consuming junk foods, when they knew to cook, they themselves prepare what they need. I feel really happy and proud, when I came to know from their mother’s, that they cook the same dish at home. Also the whole family loved the food and this would be most pride moment of Being Madraasi.

This week we had two classes and due to exams there were only three of the kids coming to the class, among three (two were the youngest in the class).

Let me share the recipes and pictures taken during the class…

Frittata is an Italian dish prepared with egg as a key ingredient. Indian Frittata is the same as frittata but I have induced Indian spices like chili powder, cumin powder and garam masala, so the name. A good one for breakfast, I have also induced potatoes and carrots. Because of the egg, carrots, cheese, butter, potato it been a healthiest dish for kids. You can also add spinach to it.


As summer started, I wanted teach at least few coolants, and here comes ButterMilk (Indian coolant) available at all Indian houses throughout the summer.

Bread Gateau is an English recipe, gateau meaning a dish containing layers of fruits and cheese. As of summer, we could see varieties and colourful fruits and thought why to not go with fruits and also on the same hand it should be healthy for kids. Here comes my Bread Gateau, Bread Gateau goes out well for breakfast and as a dessert.

Indian Truffle


Recently I have been to a curtain raiser event hosted by IIHM for Young Chef Olympiad by Chef. ShaunKenworthy. We also had a master class of Indian Truffle by Chef Shaun Kenworthy, he prepared Indian Truffle.

As of now, I started taking cooking class with kids, thought of preparing some no cook recipes, this one striked my mind and I directed kids to prepare it with little twist in ingredients from what chef made, as it would be easy for kids. Kids loved it a lot, they prepared it with all interest and it got vanished in minutes. Also heard from their parents that they tried it at home, and it tasted heavenly.   • Orange juice – 1 cup
  • Biscuits – 12 nos
  • Kiwi – 2 nos
  • Apple – 1 nos
  • Banana – 2 nos
  • Cherries – 2 nos
  • Powdered sugar – 2 tsp

  • Crush 4 to 5 biscuits and then break 4 to 5 biscuits into small pieces. Keep it aside.
  • Peel and finely chop the apples into small sizes.
  • Peel and thinly slice the bananas into round shape.
  • Peel and thinly slice the kiwi into round shape and then halve them.
  • Dip the biscuit pieces in orange juice and keep it aside.
  • Take a glass, add in the biscuit pieces as the first layer, then add in the crushed biscuits as second layer.
  • Add in the half the quanity of apple pieces as the third layer, then half the quantity of the banana pieces as the fourth layer and then the kiwi fruits as the fifth layer.
  • Pour in 2 tbsps of orange juice.
  • Repeat the same process with the leftover fruits and pour in a tbsp. of orange juice.
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar over the fruits and top it with a cherry in the centre.

Serve chilled or at room temperature.

As a mother, I would say that spending or engaging kids is totally fun. But when coming to cooking it’s fun and at the same time it’s little risky, you need to have patience, stay alert each and every second, fully dedicated, have to be strict at some times.

I love and my passion for food keeps on growing day by day, already I have mentioned in my posts that my daughter do cook and the little one my son helps me in kitchen. Inspired by these kids, my daughters friends wants me to teach them cooking. But I never took it serous, but when one of my friend asked me, “why don’t you help kids engage in cooking?” I was much confused and had tons of discussion over this to my hubby. Just like that he told “you can, go ahead”.

As I always expect for something perfect in each and every thing, I want these to kids not only to cook, but also chopping, kneading, stirring, peeling, grating, folding, cleaning not only the vegetables but also the vessels and the work area, and most important is the creativity. There should be creativity in each and everything we do.

By keeping all these in my thoughts, I have started the cooking class, starting with basic things like cleaning, chopping, grating, stirring, folding, kneading along with no-flame recipes and later to flame cooking.

Class was on live from last week – Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m.

Monday 1st class: Class started with the peeling and chopping of the vegetables like carrot, salad carrot and cucumber, later peeling and grating of Radish for a salad. The main thing I got to find here was kids need more attention and care for grating than chopping.

Result: The kids love the salad, also I gave them little to take back home, to make their parents taste the food. Parents too told me the salad was lovely, I would say it would be a unforgettable, most expensive, tasty and colourful salad in the world for them, as it was prepared by their Kiddos.

Vegetable Salad - by KIDS

Wednesday 2nd Class: Class started with the cleaning of fruits (apple, banana, black grapes, green grapes, and pomegranate) few tips, chopping and mixing of fruits together with ½ tsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of orange juice.

Result: Kids loved the salad and the best way to make kids consume the fruits.

Thursday 3rd Class: Class started with separating the pomegranate seeds from the pomegranate, squeezing out lemon juice, handling juicer, filtering the juice, mixing of juice, chopping the lemon for lemon wedges to decorate the glass.
