Buttery Prawn Head Rice


As I have shared in earlier posts few recipes with prawn head – Prawn head curry, Prawn head Fry and now its prawn head rice. Instead of throwing out the prawn head, you can use them to flavor your rice, which gives you a wonderful flavor and aroma to your rice.

This is very simple and easy to prepare, but clean the prawn head well – CLICK HERE to know how to clean Prawns and Prawns head. This rice goes out well with fish curry or prawn curry. I would say when you prepare prawn curry; instead of throwing out the head you could use them in the rice as Buttery Prawn Head Rice. Let me share the recipe…

Buttery Prawn Head Rice


  • Prawn head – 150 gm
  • Steamed rice – 1 cup
  • Black pepper powder – 1 tsp
  • Garlic – 7 cloves
  • Coriander – 6 stalks
  • Butter – 2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste

Making of Prawn Head Rice –


  • Clean the prawn head – CLICK HERE to know how to clean the prawn head with video.
  • Finely chop the garlic cloves, separate the coriander leaves and stalks, finely chop them and keep it separately.
  • Heat butter in a kadai, add the garlic pieces, and cook until they turn golden brown.
  • Add the coriander stalks and cook them for few seconds.
  • Add the prawn head along with little salt and pepper powder. Cook until the prawn head turns red in color.
  • Add the steamed rice, add salt if you need for rice else leave it.
  • Cook (keep on stirring) for about 3 mins or until it becomes dry.
  • Sprinkle the chopped coriander leaves and cook for a min (keep on stirring).
  • Remove from fire and transfer it to a bowl.

Serve hot with Prawn curry or Fish curry for lunch.




Prawn / Shrimp Curry – Tuticorin Style


Already I have shared few prawn recipes, but this completely different from others. Usually we use throw out the prawn/shrimp head, already I have shared a recipe about prawn head fry and again here in this one also we are going make use of the prawn head. I have ground the prawn head with a cup of water, drained and cooked with curry.

The aroma of this curry would be unbeatable, also it tastes delicious, also a good try with prawn head. Let us move on to the recipe…

Prawn/Shrimp Curry - Tuticorin Style

Prawn/Shrimp Curry – Tuticorin Style


  • Prawns/Shrimps – ½ kg
  • Onions – 2 nos
  • Garlic – 4 cloves
  • Chili powder – 1 ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Coconut milk (thick) – 1 cup
  • Bay leaf – 1 no
  • Star anise – 1 no
  • Cloves – 3 nos
  • Cinnamon – 1” inch stick
  • Cardamom – 1 no
  • Curry leaves – two sprigs
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – 1 tbsp


  • Clean the prawns/shrimps, take out the head and keep it separately.
  • Take the prawn head with two cup of water and grind it the blender.
  • Drain the ground mixture, transfer it a mixing bowl, add in a tsp of chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt followed by the coconut milk. Mix it well, so that there would be no lumps of spice powders.
  • Peel and finely chop the onions, garlic and ginger.
  • Heat oil in kadai, add in the chopped garlic and cook for few mins.
  • Add in bay leaf, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, star anise and wait until they crackle.
  • Add in the onions and curry leaves, cook until the onions turn golden brown.
  • Pour in the coconut milk mixture, cover and cook until the raw smell goes off and it comes to semi thick consistency.
  • Add in the prawns/shrimps, cover and cook until the prawns are half cooked.
  • Remove the lid and keep in medium flame, wait until the oil separates and floats on the top of the curry.
  • Sprinkle a chopped coriander leaves and cover with the lid.

Serve hot with steamed rice.


Fried Prawn Head / Fried Shrimps Head


I have already shared few prawn/shrimp recipes, this time it is a completely different recipe with prawn head. Most of us throw the prawn/shrimp head, hereafter do not forget to try out this dish with prawn head.

This dish tastes good, crispy and crunchy. This goes out well as a starter, a side dish for lunch and also as a tea time snack. Today it’s Friday and so I am taking it to Fiesta Friday #64 hosted by Angie. Let us move on to the recipe…

Fried Prawn (Shrimp) Head

Fried Prawn (Shrimp) Head


  • Prawn / Shrimp Head – 15 nos
  • Chili powder – 1 tsp
  • Ginger-garlic paste – 1 ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 ½ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil – for deep fry


  • Clean and wash the prawn/shrimp head.
  • Take prawn heads, chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, ginger-garlic paste and salt, mix together.
  • Marinate this for 20 mins.
  • Heat oil in a kadai, drop the prawn heads and fry till it is golden brown.

Serve hot.

Note: Use only the heads of big prawn (tiger prawns).
